We were talking about this a few weeks ago, about what could this song mean. Van Dyke Parks said recently that the song was about the "decay of institutions." I'll briefly add to that a synopsis of what the folks on the petsounds list say: it's about the fall of the aristocracy and the contrasts between wealth and poverty.
