I saw him in Germany, Hannover to be precise.  He was playing at a jazz 
festival, most of the other acts being English trad-type players, not very 
interesting to me.  I'd dragged my friend Deidre along, and we were both 
mightily impressed: he had to be helped on stage, which didn't look that 
promising (we subsequently found out he'd had a stroke), but he could still 
play pretty well, and his voice was still very strong.  We chased after them 
as they were leaving (it was him, his drummer George Collins and one other 
person, all in one car) and found out that they were playing in Bremen that 
evening.  They said if we made it up there they'd get us in free.

So, Deidre and I hitched up to Bremen and got in free!  Then at the break 
they invited us back stage, and we shared some whisky, we each got a signed 
album, and the craic was good.  It was one of those unforgettable days.

Gotta go, I'll tell you the Champion Jack Dupree story next time...
