It's been so long since I've seen it. I don't remember being grossly
offended by the sound. A few points, though. Depends on the
source-a non-hifi VHS will sound, well, lo-fi. Also, broadcasters
are often careless with the quality of their sound (& video), and
then, is it routed again through a local cable company? More
degradation.
Mixing for video is a whole trip in itself. First you have to realize
that 95% of the people watching it will hear it on a single 4" speaker.
So most people will mix for that, add lots of compression, and
boost the highs and lows. Your description fits with this.
Ideally you want it to sound great on any type of system, but it
is going to be a compromise.
