I've taken into account the feedback given, and done a version 2 of my UI design suggestion for JOSM: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/JOSM/UI#New_UI_Design_.28by_Gerv.29_-_version_2
I'm still not completely certain about the Addition interface; comments on that are particularly welcome. The current plan has various advantages, such as staying modeless, entering long ways is just click-click-click, easy addition of single nodes and so on, but people might think there's a better way. Is there any possibility of getting some indication from the JOSM dev team as to whether this unified scheme stands any chance of being implemented? :-) I do think it's more consistent with other apps and both more usable and more learnable than the current modal system.
