Your system is fine. There just simply isn't enough space to fit that string. I've had to alter numerous strings in Icelandic to less optimal translations so that they can fit into a space designed for e.g. three letter English words. This can be solved in JOSM by being more generous about padding. And designing UI dialogs so that long messages flow into another line instead of under some other fixed UI element.
