Thanks for clearing that up, the missing hint was indeed that checkbox. I didn't look at the preferences before but the checkbox was off by default. Then I assumed (wrongly) that the reason it hadn't placed the audio buttons properly was because of the time zones.

Yes my GPX track is in UTC, with a Z at the end of each timestamp, as they should be. My wav files "appear" to have local timestamps, and so there's no overlap between the time ranges (as displayed) unless you take the time zone into account. But apparently it _is_ taken into account and the buttons do get placed properly after I checked that checkbox.

Well, _almost_ properly. There's still a few minutes' difference between the camera's clock and the GPS clock, because I wasn't careful to synchronize clocks beforehand, but anyway, it generally works.

It would be useful for me if that trackpoint / waypoint difference was cleared up but that's not urgent. But you answered my question, JOSM should be able to do everything that was just requested for Prune. So I'll have to make the call whether to keep it in or take it all out again...
