Java has it's own list of accepted root certificates. It is independent
from the browsers.
So you need a certificate that is signed by an authority included in
that list.

Firefox itself does not accept the server certificate on a fresh install - once you decide to trust the certificate, it adds the checkmark by default to trust it in the future. I always uncheck that in Firefox since I have no way to know how the private keys are handled.
