Dirk - You are doing great work - i just tell you that changing a default
may have huge impact on peoples workflow and this has bitten at least me
and 3 collegues in my office who stopped adding addresses and updated
josm every day to check whether bug was fixed.

Actually waiting for a bug to be fixed without even reporting it is always a dumb idea. I develop OpenSource for approx. 20 years now and still wonder about people who think that software authors magically know when they have trouble.

See above - My collegues have simply stopped adding addresses or in one
case started with ctrl-c ctrl-shift-v on the building outlines. All of
them said josm was broken in respect to address templating. My guess is
that seeing no complain does not mean everythings okay ...

No complain means everything is ok! As said this no commercial software. What counts are:

 * First: What developers want, as they do the work.
 * Second: What users report.

Everything else does not count. We can't effort usuability tests, beta tests, customer studies, ...

Users who don't get active don't exists for me. You don't need to pay for free software, but if you want something you need to get active.

If you want to have more respect to your personal opinion:
 * start helping in development, documentation, ...
 * donate (server space, money, ...)

Please check mailinglist archives. I guess i am in the top 5 people donating
server space in the past, coding (not necessarily on josm because i
dislike java) etc. I stopped with server hosting because my employee closed
this facility but thats a different story.

I don't know and care about most of the activities in the large field of OpenStreetMap in general. I'm responsible for JOSM and only that counts for me. I stopped beeing involved in other topics as JOSM consumes too much time already.

Regarding this topic: See answer to Frederiks post.
