Hello Friends,
This is in response to Christine's mail.
She had asked a query whether 'Salvation' is strictly a christian word??
Do other religion's have the concept of salvation??
Just sharing my opinion about this. Bit lengthy, please bear with me :-)
Most of the religions other than Christianity have the concept of salvation.
Hinduism call it "Moksha". They have the concept of re-incarnation.
Islam, Sikhs etc call it salvation itself.
But all these religions are the results of the 'Man's serarch for God'.
They teach about reaching salvation through doing good things (karma).
But reaching God thru man's effort is not possible...
That is why God came to this world so that those who believe in Him
shall have eternal life (John 3:16)
And salvation is only through Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12)
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith. . .
not by works" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
I have written from the scriptures of different religions for your
info. Please note that these are not for believing, but for updating your
knowledge only. :-)
-----------------Islam-----------------
"He shall cause you to die, and shall bring you back to life, and in the end
shall gather you unto Himself" (Quran 2:28)
"Those who live good will reach heaven, those who lead bad life
will be in eternal fire" (Quran 82: 13-16)
"As the rains turn the dry earth into green thereby yielding fruits,
similarly God brings the dead into life"
(Quran chapter 8 - sura Iraf meccan verses 6-13)
---------Hinduism--------------
Hindu philosophy says "god is in everything" (panentheistic)
and "everything is god" (pantheistic).
To the believers of the Vedas, death is the beginning of a new life, a life
designed and structured by one's own karmas (actions).
"He who is happy within and who is illuminated within, that yogi attains
absolute freedom or moksha" (Bhagavad Gita V. 23,24)
"A truly wise mourn not either for the dead or for the living.
But hope for life after death" (Bhagavad Gita II. 11)
Krishna says in Bhagavat Gita, " with death, the soul merely discards the
old body and acquires a new one".
Vedanta also teaches the gospel of action (karma).
"The purpose of this mortal life is to reach the shore of immortality by
conquering both life and death"
(Srimad Bhagavatam XI. xiii)
--------- Budhism----------
I should be a lamp for the world Replete with the virtues of Budhahood,
Their ten powers, their omniscience. All sentinent beings burn with greed,
anger and folly; I should save and free them, have them extinguish the pains
of the
states of woe (Garland Sutra 36)
Budhism's concept of salvation is free of all the pains.
----------Sikhism-------------
The Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib talks about salvation
and the ways to attain it through good actions.
(Hey, I could n't find any quotes for that. I will send it later if I get
some)
------------------------------------------------
Hope this information will help you in sharing Jesus as
the only saviour, to people who believe in other religion.
I have written this without much editing. So, please
ignore the language and spelling mistakes....
thanks,
Mathew Joseph,
Bangalore, India.
