Dear Brothers and Sisters in Jesus, Our lady appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531. He was an Aztec. Thereare a few people from the Aztec culture in my parish. To this date, there is Manjanita, a custom to awaken the people early in the morning with music. People gather around the Church to sing mananita and they sing devotional songs. This indeed is a way to awaken themselves through joyful songs to Our Blessed Mother.
Today we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Gaudalupe. This is a rich tradition in the Latin Church, especially in the Latin American Countries. I was watching the cultural extravaganza added to this great festivity in Mexico City, last night. Mary our Mother appeared to many people throughout the world with the same message of renewal. I wish you all a Happy Feast. Fr Thomas Mathew California Please read : "Guadalupe appeared to the devout Nahua Indian Juan Diego in December of 1531, ten years after Cortez' conquest of Tenochitlan -- Mexico City. The story of her appearance is recounted in great detail in the "Nican Mopophua," the Aztec oral history of Gaudaloupe which was written down in Nahautl by Don Antonio Valeriano sometime between 1540 and 1580...The Virgin appeared to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill, the same sacred location where Aztecs worshipped goddess Tonantzin -- which means "Our Mother." Guadalupe's appearance at Tepeyac foretold the fusion of two cultures, Spanish Catholic and Native American. Many found their faith through this divine gesture of acceptance."
