Dar Friends, Two years back the Pope came to India and issued a clarion call for the evangelisation of Asia. It would be appropriate for us to examine in our own lives, how seriously we have taken this call, and how far we have put it into practice. Since he seems to have given us a time frame of one thousand years, some may think that it is much too early to ask this question! India is a pluralistic society where different faiths co-exist, so the average Indian Christian�s mentality is � Why rock the boat? Am I not, at the individual level, giving witness to Christ through my clean life? Hopefully, this should be sufficient to get me a seat in Heaven. Active evangelisation is the job of the priests and missionaries. Ordinary Christians are not supposed to go into controversial issues like evangelisation and invite trouble. Moreover, we ourselves are so weak in our faith, so how will we convince others?�
Every human being has the right to know the true God. God has given us Christians the special mission to be His messengers to the world. Knowing only too well the low level of our faith-theology, He has given us the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of boldness, to strengthen and encourage us. When we stand up to evangelise, we are not to worry about what to say. The Holy Spirit Himself will tell us what we should say. We certainly cannot afford to have a complacent attitude. Christ says, �I know that you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were either one or the other! But because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth!� (Rev. 3:15,16) God, ultimately, does not look at our abilities. Rather, he looks at our availability for his mission. Someday, we all have to stand before the Throne of Judgement. Then we shall remember his words, some of us with joy and others with regret: �I assure you that whoever declares publicly that he belongs to me, I will do the same for him before my father in heaven.� (Mt. 10:32) Before it is too late, let us re-examine our attitude towards active evangelisation, so that we can joyfully claim this promise of Jesus on the Last Day!
