I've seen this behavior but as of yet have not been able to
consistently recreate it across versions of Safari. My eventual
workaround was the same you came up with. If you can come up with a
simple test case and file a bug for it (http://dev.jquery.com/ -- let
me know the number here) I'll make sure to run it down.
