Yeah I figured looking at the elements offsetWidth/offsetHeight would
be faster that looking up rendered display style, I just didn't even
think about which element the hide() method was actually being called
on.  The inner element was floated and thus was removed from the
flow.  So its parent element which hide() was being called on had a
offsetHeight of 0.
