Thanks for the pointers.
Unfortunately, with or without an xml prolog and whatever the DOCTYPE I
still have the bug. $(window).scrollLeft() & .scrollTop() do not work in
IE7. I have strictly no clue what could trigger that in my page but, heh, I
think it's how "magic" Redmond code can be.

The most frustrating is probably that it worked in 1.2.x... but I guess I
changed something on the page during the migration that may have triggered
the problem. To say I'm tired of Internet Explorer right now would be an
understatement.

Anyway, thanks again for the help DBJ.
