I implemented this several ways using jQuery and using my own invocation of XMLHTTP (to an http handler outside my web service).
I opted for the independent (roll your own) implementation. I haven't the time or inclination to check the implications for running this via jQuery. I main downside is that I ended up with something outside the web service. Thanks for the feedback.
