No one suggested not supporting IE in general, and supporting IE6 is
not at all a binary decision, as you begin to hint toward the end.
There are plenty of ways to cleanly offer reduced functionality.  It
is quite professional for any web developer to do cost/benefit
analysis on various levels of IE6 support, and the plain reality is
that every passing week reduces the reasons to fully support IE6.

And every feature not supported on IE6 does damage the usefulness of
that browser to the end user, which does ultimately increase pressure
on IT (either directly or indirectly) to either upgrade IE versions or
even just add an additional browser for internet apps while keeping
IE6 for intranet work.  Even those stuck on Windows 2000 have other
browser options besides IE6.
