I have this same issue and the bvdp example gives some clue that the intermittance of this problem has something to do with where your mouse is hovering.
In the bvdp example, if you move your mouse quickly off the button after clicking to collapse, then hovering back over it causes the margin to reappear. If you do not move your mouse when clicking the button, then no amount of mouse movement afterwards will cause the margin to reappear.
