This is a copy of intuit.com where the search in the top right does the same in a slightly different way. http://www.commadot.com/jquery/intuit.com/ The method described above by Klaus is technically better because it doesn't invent non-XHTML attributes. However, you should consider changing the color of the text in the field to gray when the "hint" is in there. It helps the user differentiate between typed in data and pre-populated hints.
