Sorry, your right - it's been so long since I've had dialup and it's still early on a friday, i didn't do my math right.
Even so, I still stick to my 'magic' number. Our company normally deals with large images and photos, but I always optimize them as much as possible (the average 3.7mb photo, I reduced down to 65kb at 800x533) to display on the site - although I provide a link to the high-res image if required. I've seen plenty sites that don't bother, and even on broadband the page can take ages to load.
