[jQuery] search through ajax object

Hi,
if I use $.ajax() to fetch a file. Would it be possible to search throught
that file for a certain element and use that? 
like 
                $.ajax({
                    url: "getthis.html",
                        success: function(html){
                        var mynewdiv = lookformydiv("#mydiv") in html   //this 
is what i
want to do
                        $("#content").append(#mynewdiv);
                }
it would a great help
