How do you load your different stylesheets? Basic style elements like background-color etc load pretty fast, its the images that usually take time.
So I think you should check by trying different background colors, because I face the same problem while the styles are switching. Also, try the LiveQuery plugin, if you're introducing new elements into the DOM (because they aren't recognised immediately), or check out Karl's 'Events' tutorial on learningjquery.com Hope this helps.
