What is being returned? A html string? Parsing it with jQuery first
might help, and you can simplify the function by passing a data
object:

function doData(_data){

   $("#doContainer").empty();

   $.get("doData.php", _data, function (response) {
         $("#doContainer").html( $(response) );
      }
   });

}

doData({p_id: 'abc', cat: 20,  cat_id: 'bcd', first: 1, last: 9});

Posting a working sample page would give you better help.
