Yeah, that's almost certainly why I opted to tinker with the actual tablesorter Javascript, I remember having that same trouble. I'm not enough of a Javascripter to know quite what went wrong.
If you want to see what I did, you can take a look at the additions I made to tablesorter http://github.com/paulhagstrom/tablesorter-enhancements/tree/master Maybe you can find a clue there as to how to access the cache from outside.
