Using Firebug, I found jquery.ui will add the class ui-sortable-
placeholder to the drop zone but it's visibility is set to hidden.
Maybe you need to set the sortable init option [forcePlaceholderSize]:
$("#columnLeft").sortable({
connectWith: ["#columnRight"],
placeholder : 'sortableHelper'
forcePlaceholderSize: 'true',
}
