Actually we considered that. It would work, except that all browsers don't support background-position-x and background-position-y (you have to set both with background-position). This would seriously bloat and complicate the css. Rather, imagine each sprite icon image is stacked vertically. Same exact background position, just swap out that background-image url. Still 5 images, but we think it's a pretty good compromise, since we've got just over 170 icons in there. You must be only seeing the backgrounds in the base theme (8 images, all either 1x100 or 1x400). ThemeRoller currently has 23 background textures. All repeat horizontally, but some repeat vertically.
