I'm getting confused about the sequencing of messages in this thread

To reload the tab from within the generated source, you could include
something like this in what's returned:
<h1>I am fresh content recently fetched from the server!</h1>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(function() {
$("#MyTabs").tabs('load', theIndexOfTheTabPanel)
});
</script>
Possibkly better is to add the .tabs('load',...) to the success
callback of your AJAX call.
In other words, you have options...
