The process you described is pretty much how datepicker positioning is
designed, if not it's a bug. Please file a ticket on our bug tracker
preferably with a demo of the issue: http://dev.jqueryui.com (requires
registration)

I've not come across this. Could you describe the "right combo of keys"?
