You can still use the themeroller themes, take a look at the tabs themeing section and just manually add the same classes.
If you did go with the tabs widget you would use the tabs select event and wouldn't have to worry about click binding or changing styles on selected criteria, but you would still have to check which criteria are selected and manually load the ajax content.
