It sounds like you're missing the icons images, which should be in a images
directory in the same directory as your theme css file. See here for
example:

http://jquery-ui.googlecode.com/svn/tags/1.7.2/themes/ui-lightness/jquery-ui.css

references icon image files in

http://jquery-ui.googlecode.com/svn/tags/1.7.2/themes/ui-lightness/images/
