This is definitely looking better, but I wasn't able to apply the patch locally because it was mangled (probably gmail's fault). I'll look forward to the updated patch.

The big motivator for this has been Rake, which wants to launch external interpreters to run test scripts and whatnot. If we can make this work pretty clean, we ought to be able to start using more "rake test"-style unit test runs within rubygems and rails. The more tests, the better, obviously.

Feel free to give rake a try with your patch if you want something else to do. We're finalizing JavaOne slides this week, preparing for a JUG presentation next week, and trying to get back up and going after the stupid SF.net CVS downtime.
