Regular _expression_ support has been a thorn in our side for some time. Java's regex library is pretty darn fast, but it's not exactly compatible with Ruby's.
Oniguruma is, as you'd expect, written in C. It is also, however, usable completely apart from C Ruby. Until such time as there's a port of Oniguruma to Java (yeah, right), it would be a very interesting project to create a Java wrapper around it.
I should make clear my position on something as well: I'm not opposed to native libraries being used from JRuby, but I think we should never require a native library and we should always have a Java or pure Ruby equivalent to support cross-platform use. Oniguruma just sounds like a cool piece of code that users might want to be able to use...and rather than trying to port it right now we could perhaps provide a wrapper.
Add it to the list of projects...anyone want to take it?
