There's a developer preview of Java 6 for OS X available from ADC, however it requires registration.

Otherwise, running the rake task using c-ruby is one way around it.

Cheers,
Robert

I happen to know the reason for this. =)

Since I know that you're still running Java 5, this is caused by our
chmod-implementation being... not optimal for things older than Java 6. (Until then, there was no way to do chmod from Java, so the Java 1.4 and
1.5 implementation shells out to an external command) ... That means
over 80K shells started, which is the reason for your slowness.

We don't really have a good solution to this problem right now. There is
a JIRA for it, and we're discussing JNI alternatives, though.

That's fair enough. I also noticed I had about 70k old files in tmp. :-) After cleaning that up it was a bit better but still quite slow.

Unfortunately I can't upgrade to Java 6 yet as Mac OS X still doesn't have it... (Come to think of it, there might be a developer preview somewhere to download...)

Cheers,
Jon
