Bruce:

Both ColdFusion and JRun are primarily used to access a database. Usually an existing
database. So to make them really useful an ISP would also have to support the common
database servers plus an assortment of drivers.

This would require a much greater investment in configuration work and license fees
than most ISPs are accustomed to. If you're seeing ASP supported by ISPs it's only
because its free.

On the development side, while ColdFusion has a relatively short learning curve java
certainly does not. If you've already invested a lot of time developing a database and
a web application the hardware required to run it doesn't look that expensive, so why
not do it yourself so you can have full control of the configuration?

Of course this makes it difficult to learn a new development tool on the cheap. But my
experience with ColdFusion and JRun is that the resulting application will work
reliably. I've not had the same experience with ASP.
