Well, I had to make a switch from Websphere to Jrun (after having been with
Websphere for a short time). Here are my bullet points:
- price - big difference - how about $700 (jrun) vs. $7000 (websphere) per
cpu
- support - I can actually talk to Allaire people directly or on this list
to get help - never been able to do with IBM without putting out some $$$
first
- speed - no comparison - Jrun is so much faster for us here - Websphere was
a big monster that required lots of server resources to run
- ability to run on local machines - here, each developer has its own dev.
version of jrun, running with a copy of the code from source control - this
gives the developer complete control over trying out things without
affecting others - we could not even attempt this with websphere because our
laptops just didn't have the ram/cpu to handle it
- standards - jrun is up there with the latest jsp/servlet specs - can't say
the same about websphere
- configuration tool - jrun offers a very nice, elegant clean web tool to
configure apps - websphere has a slow java app that does not even compare
- dev. environment - websphere studio, when used with microsoft source safe
to allow multiple developers to work together, was very very buggy - i could
not figure out how to prevent the project from crashing every other week and
having to rebuild it again. Jrun studio seems a much more mature app from
what I see.
For shops that have no experience in either, I would highly recommend jrun.
It's a very nice and clean app. server that does what it says it will do and
it does it well and fast. For shops with websphere experience that invested
resources into the product, probably it makes sense to stay the same way.
For shops with older jrun, I can't imagine why you would switch to
websphere. Even if you get websphere at a discount, it still can't possibly
be lower than jrun in price.
