Just use a try{}catch{} statement to set the default values if an exception
is thrown because nothing was passed.

Subject: Equivalent of <cfparam>?

Is there anything in JSPs which can replace the ColdFusion <cfparam> tag?
This tag is used to define a variable with a default value if it is not
already defined. Is there a JSP way of doing this?
