We are using JRun 3.0 sp2. Putting the line in deploy.properties seems to
have solved the problem. Thank you very much John and Scott!

Are you using JRun 3.0 or 3.1?
If 3.0, then the property has to go in deploy.properties and you must
redeploy your beans.
If 3.1, then the property can go in either deploy or local.properties. If
in local.properties, it must be prefixed with "ejb." like so:
ejb.ejipt.defaultTranscationTimeout=1800
