Flash may be the answer to your problem. JRun 4 ships with the Flash Remoting technology that enables Flash clients to communicate with JRun using the Flash Gateway. For more information on this technology in JRun 4 please refer to chapter 24 (Using Flash with JRun) in the JRun Programmers Guide

If you just use an applet and try to control the browser that way it won't work on IE mac because the javascript communication between components and appets and the browser doesn't work. If you try something like a swing interface you have the mammoth J2 download and no pre osx mac runtime. I can think of some other avenues to try, also, but nothing any better than these.
