The "keypress" event was meant to respond only to keystrokes that
produces printable characters.

It maybe work also for non-printable keystrokes in some browser
implementations but you should avoid using it that way if
cross-browser functionality is important.

Use keydown/keyup to catch control (unprintable) keystrokes as suggested by Tim.
