Is there any reason you're recursing rather than just looping?

function findParentElementWhichIs(start, elemName){
    var parent, parentName;
    while(parent = start.parentNode){
        parentName = parent.nodeName.toLowerCase();
        if(parentName == elemName){
            return parent;
        }
    }
    return null;
}
