It seems to me the OP didn't say the application resizes the window,
just that it restores the window previous state/dimensions (user
preferences).

I bet any other serious desktop application has an UX that does this.
Though the Web is not and does not behave like a desktop.

When an application needs more views at the same time there is no
other way to implement that except opening other views.
