Hi Pete,
Thanks for taking the time to explain this.  I believe your first example 
is incorrect though.  It should be outputting the variable d and not c.

var a = false, b = "yay", c = "foo", d; d = a || b || c; console.log(*d*); 
// outputs "yay"
