Follow-up: Just for fun, I connected the S/PDIF cable to the S/PDIF
out of my M-audio 2496 card. Voila. Set one or two things in the
M-audio control pannel and instant sound through the DAC!
I'm still puzzled why I can't get this to work through the Motu
however. I'd love to have it and the DAC used for more serious
things, with Windows sounds and jaws going through the M-audio card.

Hi folks.
Has anybody successfully used their Motu 828MK2 or 3 interface
wiht an external DAC?
I'm trying to get my Motu 828MK3 audio interface working with a
Mytek Stereo 96 DAC. I'm running a single S/PDIF cable from the
Motu's S/PDIF out, to one of the DAC's two S/PDIF inputs. I have
the correct input selected on the DAC.
I'm not hearing anything at all through the DAC. A sighted person
has varified that the light beside S/PDIF on the front pannel is
lit solid. If it were blinking, that would indicate a problem of
some sort but it stays lit, as it apparently should do.
The DAC side is simple - one button toggles between using the DAC
itself as the clock, and using an external clock (such as the
Motu). The only other button on the DAC cycles between four input
options: S/PDIF input 1, S/PDIF input 2, AES, and Toslink. To
keep things simple I have the DAC set to be the clock, and I have
the correct S/PDIF input selected.
On the MOTU side, in the Audio Console application, I've tried
setting the clock source to either internal or S/PDIF, and I've
switched the Mains from XLR outs to S/PDIF.
But, no sound. Do I have to get someone to do something in Cuemix
FX with the mouse? Could the S/PDIF outs be disabled somewhere in
Cuemix, despite what I have things set to in the Console application?
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Chris
