Thanks for the tips guys. Yes, the problem was that I was using an external synth both to record the midi and to play it. To achieve the results I wanted, I needed to insert an audio track and record the previously recorded midi tracks back into sonar.
Of coarse, this didn't work at first; I'm using a Delta 44 card and had the mixer in use plugged into inputs 3 and 4. Guess sonar doesn't like that, no audio came through and I couldn't fix it in settings. So I plugged the mixer into 1 and 2 and it all came together. It's amazing what can be done after 20 or 30 hours of hard work! Richard
