I guess you wanted to say "HTTP specifications".
HTML is just a markup language - and is used by
browsers when "text/html" mime type is detected.

There is almost nothing in JSP that prevent you to use it for
other data formats.
( in fact, it allows you to set the response mime type - that
means they had in mind other types of response
besides HTML).
