Oh dear.
In my long history of Web consulting, I have found the Netscape web server
inferior to both
Apache and JWS. It has a nice web administration interface, and integration
with LDAP
was nice, but Netscape *never* supported it and it had a horrible VM.
For instance, for an entire *year* I tried to get Netscape to add a simple
fix to increase
the heap size for the VM from 16mb to a configuration variable. I was
running
Netscape on a machine with 512mb of ram, but it was only able to use 16mb.
The
solution was to use RMI to host the servlet functions external to the
Netscape VM,
but even RMI suffered from too much GC on a small heap. I couldn't even get
them
to add a simple configuration parameter, after paying big bucks for gold
support
(entitling me to direct phone calls with the engineers)
Kiva might be great, but NES isn't and I doubt it is as scalable as JWS or
Apache.
I hate to jump on the open-source bandwagon, because I don't think it's a
panacea, but if Sun
is going to abandon JWS, perhaps we should press them to release the source?
