One interesting technique I don't think I have seen discussed here is the use of the "extends" keyword to manage forced login... Considering you can specify a different class to inherit from, and if that class extends HttpJspBase and overrides the service method - before it sends the request off to the _jspService method, it could check for login and redirect.
