Hi Nic ,
No files are getting created in the pagecompile directory under
servlets directory of the websphere.
Hope this could help in getting some clues,

Try not descending it from canvas - I _think_ thats an AWT (or swing)
component, which server side - ie, no gui - java will not like.
Try just descending it from Object (ie, no parent).
