I have the same problem and was in contact with JWS engineering. That is the
reply. I find that extremely limiting and disappointing as the JSP spec
makes no such restrictions (at least I haven't found a statement in that
direction).

I checked with JWS engineering and it looks like a limitation of JSP.
The output stream is always a JspWriter.
I don't think it can be done. The 'out' variable will always
be there and as they know, it is of type JspWriter, meaning
it was initialized via response.getWriter().
