Jeff, while I can't speak to the Wrox Press book, I can say that you're
not going to get much opinion on the Manning book, because it's not out
yet; I know this, because I'm the author of it. :)
Seriously, Server-Side Java (the actual title, though the website hasn't
been appropriately updated) is not about servlets or JSP, but about doing
server applications and systems using Java. In fact, one of the reviewers
of the text complained that it doesn't cover enough on servlets (I only
dedicate a small section to the discussion of servlets, and even then to
simply point out that I think servlets and application servers have a
different relationship than most others believe).
What it *does* cover is ClassLoaders in Java 2 (extensively), Extensions,
Threads, Monitoring & Configuration, Sockets, Serialization & Persistence,
a bit about JDBC (although I'm assuming you're already familiar with
relational databases and SQL), an example n-tier "business object" model,
and object distribution (RMI, including RMI/IIOP, CORBA, and some other,
new, technologies & approaches).
Any other questions I can answer about it, I'm happy to do so; the book's
finished its final review, so it should be on track for release in 1Q2000
(assuming we're not all reeling from the end of civilization, that is). :)
