yes, they should be serializable.

Consider a situation where you have an application bean which holds all sorts of
neat information.

if the bean is serializable, and the server needs to shut down, those beans can
be serialized to disk
and brought back when the server restarts with no loss of information.

I believe Weblogic, for instance, automatically serializes beans when it shuts
down and re-loads them
on restart.   not absolutely sure but i beleive that is the case.
